Now that many companies are granting domestic-partner benefits to their LGBT employees, companies should consider implementing LGBT sensitive EAP programs. An EAP program is an Employee Assistance Program that makes resources available to employees, such as mediation, in order to help them remain emotionally and mentally stable, so they may work efficiently. Employees can use the EAP service to handle disputes between coworkers and deal with family or personal issues that may arise. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people often face issues such as coming-out at work, discrimination, and relationship concerns. It is important for a company to employ a program that is sensitive to LGBT issues. Although standard EAP programs are adequate in handling a vast array of people, it is crucial that EAP mediators have been trained and understand specific issues and pressures faced by the LGBT community.
